Kensington and Chelsea Review had the privilege of getting a cheeky taste of the Wimbledon Championships before the tournament commences. And, by taste we literally mean an impressive sampling of the food available at Wimbledon which goes far beyond just strawberries & cream. We were graciously invited to a curated showcase of dishes from across the Championship’s myriad public restaurants and food and drink outlets, showcasing the sheer breadth, quality and creativity of dining at The Championships.

Celebrating British culinary history, the menus t Wimbledon are rooted in the finest produce from the country and a deep respect for the British Isles. Guided by seasonality and provenance, the idea is simple: to balance tradition with contemporary influence to deliver exceptional flavour. Their approach is an environment-positive approach which encompasses plant-based dishes, responsibly sourced seafood and a commitment to reducing waste.
Sam Morgan, with over 20 years of expertise and five Championships under his belt at the All England Lawn Tennis Courts proved to be a remarkable host with his equally able team of chefs and front-of-staff stalwarts. This will be his first year leading the line as Executive Chef after successfully leading the Royal Room’s elite operations, Sam will oversee over 300 chefs during The Championships, Wimbledon. From the Royal Box to the strawberry-loving public, he ensures world-class catering for players and guests.

The food on offer was outstanding beyond expectations and those were set high this being Wimbledon. Sample canapés and starters included Coronation Chicken Tart canapes, Chilled Isle of White Tomato Soup a la Gazpacho and Tandoori Chalk Stream Trout Croustard the latter a treat partnered with date & tamarind chutney, yoghurt cucumber and mint salsa. For seafood lovers there was the Wingfield Shellfish Platter which consists of a delectably dressed Devon crab, lobster mayonnaise, pickled Charlestown mussels, prawns, cured Chalk Stream trout, sea bream ceviche, candied jalapeño all served with saffron potato salad, soda bread, dressed summer leaves, caper & lemon dressing and also Walled Graden Fried Chicken for poultry lovers.

If you are looking to unearth the heritage of Britain’s larder, inspired by the land and the sea, walk over to the edge of court 11 to find Centenary Brasserie, a restaurant located away from the crowds but still in the heart of the action. Inside, discover an elevated dining experience that showcases the heritage of Britain’s larder with a menu that features classically inspired dishes from the sea and land.

Perfectly located within No. 1 Court, The Cavendish is an ideal spot for a relaxed lunch between matches, while remaining close to the action. Guests can also drop in for a quick tea or coffee or enjoy an afternoon sweet treat. Enjoy a wide selection of dishes, including Isle of Wight tomato salad and North Atlantic smoked haddock fishcake, or the classic Wimbledon strawberries and cream

Located in Centre Court, The Wingfield Restaurant offers a perfect base for your day at The Championships, overlooking the historic Tea Lawn. Savour the finest seasonal dishes, from smoked Chalk Stream trout with Isle of Wight tomatoes, bergamot and dill to roasted black bream with curried fish velouté and samphire.
Finally, if you’re looking for something on the go at the Championships, whether that be a glass of Champagne, the perfect cup of tea, or something more substantial before heading back to court, go for Wimbledon Picnic which is a modern take on a much-loved tradition. Carefully prepared using the finest seasonal ingredients, each picnic is designed for two and available both at The Championships and to enjoy at home. Vegetarian, non-gluten containing ingredients and plant-based options are also available.
