TreeHouse@51 – Fusion within the Gates of Taj

The Taj Group sit atop the pyramid of luxury hotel offerings in India still largely unrivalled by worthy competitors such as Oberoi and The Leela. A pioneer since before independence from Britain, the Taj name signifies status, glitz, glamour and opulence like no other and is owned by the mightiest corporate name in all of South Asia – Tata Group. However, unlike the group’s computer and technology consultancy arm – Tata Consultancy Services – which is a global behemoth, Taj has yet to unfurl its flags all across Europe. London is the only city that hosts its two European outposts – 51 Buckingham Gate and St. James’ Court, both huddled within a shared space in the heart of the capital. The Indian touches abound and in the middle of Westminster including sculpted, bejewelled elephants welcoming patrons and guests at the gate.

Amongst the oriental splendour resides TH@51 which is a new addition to the bevy of eating and drinking establishments within the ’Taj enclave’. It is an impressive fusion restaurant boasting vastly interesting flavours sourced and fused from various cuisines although the emphasis is mostly Indo-Global. Offerings such as Double Fish and Chips with flavour pairings from both Indian and Britain and Coronation Malai Chicken are the more straightforward dishes but then there are vegetarian options such as Bao Bhaji, Portobello Phuket and Paneer Wellington which offer a more accurate idea of the restaurant’s ambitions. We recommend every starter on the Small Dishes list especially the Burrata Kale Chaat and Desi Scotch Egg and indeed all cocktails on the menu which include Breath of Fresh Air, a curious combination of Ginepraio, pine cordial, swiss herbs, gentian & juniper and elderflower cider and Genghis’ Yurt – a heady mix of Hennessey VS, leather, stout, beer, chocolate, kefir and yolk. The possibility of sitting outdoors in the courtyard makes TH@51 an ideal lunch destination for Spring and Summer and for late night soirees around the table anytime of the year with its roomy glass dining room, eyecatching open kitchen and an inviting bar area.

TH@51 is a worthy addition to the astonishingly impressive stable of food and drink offerings at the Taj Estate which includes Quilon, the only Michelin starred south Indian restaurant in London. Perefect for a peaceful and relaxing lunch or a celebratory dinner all topped off with immaculate service and distinguished ambience.
