Magma Resort Santorini: a sophisticated resort nestled on lava-made slopes

In July I was very lucky to have stayed at Magma Resort Santorini. Managed by SWOT Hospitality, this 59-room retreat nestled on the lava-made slopes of Vourvoulos amidst traditional vineyards provides a haven of privacy and relaxation like no other.

Upon my arrival, I was welcomed with a refreshing cocktail, enhanced with local ingredients improvised by the extremely talented bartender. With drink in hand, I was taken on a brief tour of the resort, which included a lovely walk up to my room, located at the top of this charming retreat.

My room was beautifully spacious, featuring sophisticated interiors for a lavish stay, including a cozy veranda and a walk-in shower. The private outside pool view opened up to the depths of the Aegean Sea. The architecture, inspired by traditional Cycladic dwellings, seamlessly blended modernity and sustainability with the island’s natural essence.

Particularly magnificent, was the view from the infinity pool and bar, leading your gaze far out into the enticing blue of the sea. The bar, playing relaxing tunes and serving a variety of tempting snacks, delectable dishes and aperitifs was a fantastic way to spend the day lazing in the sun. Using local ingredients like rosemary tonic or black olives, cocktails served here embraced twists that added a touch of Santorini’s character – what a dreamy way to spend several days! Adding a personalised touch, the bartender allowed us to sample a homemade syrup made from the Greek spice ‘Throubi’.

The dining experience at Magma Resort Santorini was nothing short of delightful. In the evening, I experienced a truly extraordinary dining affair in the Michelin-star restaurant, led by chef Arnaud Bignon. Their “open show” kitchen presented a unique culinary spectacle. While dining in this stunning calm semi-lit outside terrace, I took in the view of the sea, glistening away in the sunset, while sipping on a glass of locally produced wine paired with the meal.

One of the standout experiences at the resort was the private wine tasting tour, taking me through the island’s traditional vineyards and offering tastings of distinctive local wines, from the sophisticated Assyrtiko grape to the delectable Santorinian Vinsanto. This unforgettable tour provided an opportunity to taste local wines, perfectly paired with charcuterie and cheeses that enhanced the experience even further.

To impress me further, the resort’s exquisite facilities included a state-of-the-art spa offering volcanic-based treatments. I was in awe of the resort’s Lava Spa, the largest subterranean spa on the island and the array of indulgent experiences. From the indoor heated pool and sauna to the steam room and treatment rooms, every detail is designed to revitalise your mind and body.

Each treatment was catered towards my individual needs, with experienced and thoughtful professionals adjusting each practice to my preferences. The resort also offers a fully equipped gym and a range of activities like hiking and snorkeling.

I particularly enjoyed the sun-drenched yoga classes which allowed me to connect with the island’s stunning natural environment. A wonderful way to wake up the body every day, the Yoga sessions with Marina were relaxing, yet physically empowering. The routine was fantastically personalised and thoughtful, embracing the sunrise and views offered from the restaurant’s rooftop view.

As part of the fantastic service, the hotel concierge was always on hand to arrange all activities, and ensure a personalised experience is tailored to my preferences and desires.

Magma Resort Santorini is the ideal location for special occasions, offering impeccable service and breathtaking venues for sensational parties, successful business meetings, and dreamy weddings.
