The Counter, a contemporary ocakbasi restaurant in Notting Hill from chef Kemal Demirasal

Recently opened on Golborne Road, The Counter’s menu showcases traditional south eastern Anatolian cooking styles mixed with chef-founder Kemal’s groundbreaking take on his native cuisine. Once a champion windsurfer, but now lauded as one of Turkey’s top chefs, self-taught Kemal is best known for his avant garde, fine dining restaurant Alancha in Istanbul, which was cited as one of the best restaurants in the Middle East by the World’s 50 Best Discovery Series.

Taking its distinct taste inspirations mainly from the Southeastern Anatolia Region, The Counter enriches its presentation and atmosphere with the cultural heritage of the Balkans.

The Counter’s kitchen is set up in the middle of an open counter, which the restaurant is named after, and where the guests are always welcome to gather around. The interior of the restaurant channels the intimacy of a Turkish home, with diners having the option to take a front row seat at the eponymous ‘counter’, and follow their dish in the making. However, there are also plenty of more private seating areas for guests to enjoy.

At The Counter, Kemal uses a charcoal-fired mangal and the finest Turkish ingredients to create innovative twists on classic dishes. There has clearly been a lot of thought and planning put into the creation of these pieces of art, with each dish presenting a distinct layering of flavour, inspired by the best quality ingredients.

To drink, guests can enjoy an extensive selection of wines from Turkey, a list of premium rakis, and an innovative cocktail menu, featuring a kebab-inspired Satir Kiyma cocktail made using lamb fat-washed rye whisky, red pepper and chilli flakes, along with the Şalgam, a mezcal cocktail made with salgam juice, a fermented black carrot and turnip juice traditionally served alongside kebabs.

The restaurant is always buzzing with guests making their way from near and far to try this new twist on a traditional cuisine. Do book to ensure you get a table!
